This is part of the last prophecy in the O.T.
It concerns the return of Elijah the prophet (not John the Baptist or some other man) to the earth, from heaven, shortly before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord (v 5-6). At that time there will be one of the greatest spiritual awakenings in the history of mankind. The hearts of fathers and sons, all children and parents, will be turned toward one anoter, families will be united in Christ, the Holy Spirit will be outpoured upon all flesh and even all of Israel will be saved as a result of the ministry of Elijah and Enoch as in v 5-6. and Rev 11 v 3-10, Acts 2 v 16-21, Rom 11 v 25-29, Is 66 v 7-8 and other scriptures will be literally fulfilled. All this will come to pass instead of a curse upon the earth.

So it is still due to happen. What a wonderful time to come.

Basically the book of Malachi was directed at the Jewish priesthood, which had become complacent and corrupt. The author was imploring the priesthood to repent and minister to their flock properly before it was too late. In the case of the Jews this obviously did not happen in time to save the priests...or the Jewish people living in Jerusalem...as the priesthood was dissolved, and Jerusalem destroyed, by 70 AD....so that by the time John and Jesus had arrived at the Jerusalem areas and preached, it was far too late.
Although we have Jesus talking about John the Baptist as Elijah in the NT, interpreting these passages leaves much room for controversy. If John really was Elijah, that would imply reincarnation...something Christianity does not advocate...(or at least that modern Christian doctrine does not advocate). Reincarnation would require a radical rethinking of religious beliefs, and people naturally tend to resist major changes in their traditions. Perhaps the author of Malachi is simply referring to the situation in the Samarian Kingdom in and about the times of Ahab and Jezebel, and the subsequent appearance of the prophet Elijah, coming to preach against them, and the tragic results of all these things. And then again, maybe not...

Yes it has happened but again the world rejected it, Elijah was actually the Spirit of God come to pronounce judgment upon the Gentile world before God's Angels come with Plagues upon the earth.
We are seeing the beginning of these plagues with earthquakes and many people dying with diseases and wars.
John the Baptist was Elijah also but not that Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord;
Matthew 11:14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
the Hearts being turned is to the original Pentecostal Fathers in the book of Acts, and only children will receive the knowledge of the truth.
Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
Matthew 17:12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
Matthew 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Malachi 4:5 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction."

John the Baptist was a "type" of Elijah whom Jesus affirmed would come back to earth before He came again. Just like John the Baptist, the preaching of Elijah and possibly Moses or less likely Enoch will serve to prepare the hearts of people going through the great tribulation to receive Jesus as their Messiah/Savior.

Revelation 11:3 And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth." 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5 And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed. 6 They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire.

7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, 8 and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified.

9 For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, 10 and those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here!" And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them.

13 And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. 14 The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come.

15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever." 16 And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying, "We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.

The Scriptures do no longer help "as quickly as saved constantly saved." That replaced into an distinctly modern-day theory (decrease than a hundred years). The historic Church has in no way made this variety of declare. Paul is particularly sparkling that salvation could be forfeited. we are to %. up our crosses daily, no longer basically as quickly as. we are to have faith in Jesus daily, no longer basically as quickly as. we are to end the race in basic terms like someone getting right into a marathon.
