Lemon solution does work but a more effective lightening cream is hydroquinone which is contained in some anti-acne and anti-aging creams like Acne Free.
Apply it to the areas you wish to lighten.
Also exfolliate the old skin cells away beforehand with a Buff Puff. That in itself will help lighten since young cells are usually lighter and will make other treatments more effective.
And be sure that you use sunblock when you go out since lightening reduces your own protectine melin pigment.

Using lemon juice is a good tip. However, do NOT apply it to your neck. The skin on the neck is thinner & more delicate than other parts of the body & lemon juice is too harsh for it.
For your neck, try Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Facial Cleansing Pads - the cleanser has a fresh scent & the pad has a textured side for exfoliation.
I also suggest using a body lotion w/ AHA, lactic acid or glycolic acid on your elbows. These acids help slough off dead skin cells.
As for the underarms, use a gentle soap & washcloth. Take care not to over scrub as this will irritate the skin & lead to more darkening.
Try using a crystal deoderant or a natural one for awhile. Anti-perspirant/deoderant combination products can block your pores & irritate your skin.
Here are some links w/ more information about 2 brands I recommend: http://www.tomsofmaine.com/

What are your 'dark spots' from? I have dark spots from acne scars, and I'm using an acne treatment to not only treat the zits but have the skin with the dark scarring peel off as well. The treatment is called Retin-A, and it's working for me, so if that's the source of those spots, you might want to try it or something else that makes the skin peel so the scar tissue peels away.

i've seen a lot of questions like yours, and i've always recommended the use of safe (no hydroquinone or mercury) and potent (not the usual commercial grade products) skin lightening products that show good results just like what i've seen.. here's where you can find them -
