No, if you can deal with the smell you should not unless you "pinch a loaf". the smell can get a bit heavy after a day but if you keep some bleach nearby or a scenting device near your bowl then you should be OK. You can also but a bluing bleach "cake in the the tank so that the smell doesn't get overwhelming and its not so difficult to clean. if someone comes over though flush it before they use it a courtesy to that individual (who will end up flushing it, most likely, anyway)

I filled a plastic drink bottle with water and stuck in the cistern, which saves quite a bit of water each flush, so I am able to flush without using quite so much water, but the loo can still remain clean and sweet smelling.

They used to sugguest putting a brick in, but it could damage the cystern and the bricks disintigrate and could cause a problem, any way, my bottle idea has been in over two years now and still works, would love to know just how much actually saved, every bit helps!

It depends on the environment you're in. At home, if there is an agreement with all parties, then it's good to only flush when necessary. When you're out, flush everytime.

Why not step outside and see how the back lawn is doing? Why not replace the cistern with a dual flush one, as Australians have done since about 1980.

Flush no matter what! My mom doesn't flush when she gets up to pee in the middle of the night. When I get up in the morning, the bathroom smells like pee. Gross!
