is the military really welfare with pride? i mean alot of people have between 2 and 6 kids that are in the military and we all know alot of these parents have very little education and they could not get a job paying more than 7 dollars an hour in the civilian sector, which means they would have to be on welfare or some kind of other government assistance, so its really no different except now they can have some pride by saying they are in the service. or am i really off base here?

to usafbrat64, thank you for the info, i will look it up and correct my question if the info is actually there, but the numbers you gave seem quite small when compared to the number of people in the service, dont you think so? so my question was not unfounded.

Most people in the military have college educations and most are in the military to pay for thier college education. The knowledge that is learned in the military will actually get a person a job that pays quite well. Most companies see this as equvilant to college depending on what their job was/is in the military.

First... quit trying to start a fight when you don't even have the ammo!
So, here are the facts regarding education:
Enlisted corp:266,839
HS diploma only - 11,255
At least 12 hrs. of college credit - 194,440
Associated degree - 45,450
Bachelors degree - 13,084
Masters degree - 1,999
PHD - 15
Only 5% of active duty Air Force has no college! 95% are pursuing a degree!! And they do all of this while working full time, raising families, deploying to locations for months at a time, moving every 4 years, etc.
Now, for the family size - only 50% of active duty enlisted have dependants. And among them, yes, you will find families of various sizes. And, guess what... among civilians, you will find families of various sizes! Actually, you will find among most military families there are 2-3 kids. Anything larger than that is actually rare! Sorry I don't have actual statistics on that one, but I've seen enough that I have a pretty good idea.
EDIT- My info is strictly Air Force. I don't have the facts and figures on the other forces, but I'm sure they are pretty equitable.

A lot of people everywhere have 2-6 kids. I'm a military wife and we have no children. It's not about the money (or the lack thereof) its about service. You sound a bit like John Kerry, perhaps YOU should become more educated about the military statistics. There are just as many military members without college education as there are civilians without college education. Why don't you sign up and trying doing this sh*t!

No, you are not really off base.
You are way the hell off base.
At my current duty station, the education motto is "No one transfers without a degree"
I am one of the few without a degree, but am only 6 hours short, and just arrived 3 months ago. Some of the most intelligent people I have ever met are in the military. I will grant you that is not true in all cases, but I bet there is a much lower average level of education in your hometown than there is in the military.
As for the family comments: 1) Most of my cowokers have no children, 2) Those who do have 2 or less.
Hopefully that helps some.

No its not. A servey was taken and said that most of all us military members were upper middle class citizens who came from good backgrounds. The reason that troops have dificulties getting back into civie life is becuase,
you join at 18, or so,
you spend 2-7 years learning military training and tacktics,
then you get out and are 25 and havnt had a job where you go to everyday and are doing math all day.
Not to say our troops arnt smart. They take a test called ASVAB and only highschool grads with a high enough score are allowed in military jobs. No medical conditions, no crimial record, etc.
I believe Audie Murphy said it best,
We are going to be well sougth after when we get back home. Well think about it, we can throw a grenade farther than anyone else, we can shoot a german dead at 300 yards with an m1 gerande, we can shower in our helmets, we can run 10 miles with full gear and rations. There will be jobs galor when we get back.

Seriously...all of America has between 2 and 6 kids...what now the military can't have kids? Do you realize how many people don't actually graduate high school (which are usually ones on welfare)...you have to have your high school diploma to join...and...I'm sure people that are willing enough to graduate would not just go off and join the military because they don't have the brains to do something else with their life.
Thank you NukinHawg..I almost forgot to point that out...some of the most intelligent people are in the military..a few of my friends in the mil. have IQs near or of geniuses. Please don't tell me if they hadn't joined the military they would have been flipping burgers at Mcdonalds with 7 kids sucking money out of tax payers.
