They're trying to help. And when done in moderation, it can be helpful, but I agree that busybodies who have something to say about *everything* are extremely annoying. And sometimes it can be hard to find the balance between keeping your mouth shut & later hearing 'well, if you knew how it worked why didn't you SAY something!' and giving too much unwanted advice. You don't like unsolicited advice but others get upset when you let them muddle along and never say a thing.

I think the most important when giving advice is not being pushy, it should be just a suggestion. If unwanted, don't keep talking explaining every detail & don't be upset when someone doesn't take the advice. If more people did that it wouldn't be annoying and people wouldn't be left to muddle along too much either.

If you put the problem "out there" someone will try to help. It seems that we are wired as human beings to do that. Otherwise Yahoo Answers would not exist would it?
Two reasons for giving advice, and two different types of people will answer. One just wants you to be happy, so they want to fix it. The other is looking to enhance their own self worth and sees it as an opportunity to show you that they know more than you do. I think the latter is the problem here.
If you don't want advice but just someone to listen and sympathize then say so at the beginning.i.e."I just have to say this out loud, because I am trying to work it out in my head...don't worry...I can handle it ....I know I can.!"
Then tell your story and finish off with, "Thank you so much for listening to me! I feel so much better now!
That might slow down the advisors...but don't count on it.
As I said in the beginning, if you put the problem out there, someone is going to wade in a try to help you!
Sorry...that is just they way we humans work...
(btw...I am the one that just wants people to be happy..)

Very often, it is simply people trying to find a way to 'connect' with someone else. They perceive a problem and start thinking of a solution, and share the good news ~ with you.

You can turn it into a conversation or get all thingy about it, it's up to you!

Good luck :-)

Maybe they're smarter than you are, and simply can't contain themselves when they see you doing something idiotic.

Probably if you had more sense and judgment, you wouldn't get so much unsolicited advice.

It can be like pulling out your own teeth sometimes when people walk up to you and begin to offer unwelcome advice, i agree. However, as annoying as some advice may be, sometimes there will be a gem to hold on to.

I agree with Goddess-if you talk about your life, people are going to want to get involved, especially if they perceive a problem.

Sory, some people are just so beyond help that we just make the best of the given situation. Oh, and, its an easy way of making points.

maybe if you kept your problems and questions to yourself people wouldn't feel you're asking for their opinion or answers to your questions.
