My doctor put me on ambien. It works well but makes me very spacey the next day.

Try Ambien CR. I am less spacey with that.

Or, you may want to try Lunesta. I have ok results with that, too.

You may want to try a natural herb or vitamin supplement (several are available) talk to your local pharmacist and see what they recommend and let them know what other drugs you take to avoid interactions.

Also, talk to your doctor and/or PA and tell them what problems you are having.

I would also take a hard look at what is at the root of your insomnia. Is it your eating late? Drinking too much caffeine during the day or evening?

Stress? Stress is a notorious sleep depraver. What's going on in your life right now that keeps your wheels turning late-night? Try exercising at the gym. Even a nice, long walk in the evening can have dramatic benefits.

Read before you go to bed and try a warm glass of milk. L-tryptophane (sp?) occurs naturally in milk and turkey (hence everyone passing out after T-Day dinner) and is a great sleep inducer.

Do a thorough evaulation of the things going in and out of your body...and in and out of your mind...and see if you can identify and make positive changes that effect your sleep patterns.

You will eventually find what the problem is and will begin to sleep better at night. If you are relying on power naps, take care that you don't overdose on napping and further throw sleep patterns out of whack.

Jeez, maybe I have a career opening a sleep clinic. Whomever suggested maturbation...not a bad idea, it does relax the body and makes you sleepy, too. It may help you, too, but not on a regular basis because we all know it leads to blindness...:)

Wishing you a good night's sleep...

I used the same solution as hellojenil. I traveled a lot as part of my job. I have a problem sleeping in new environments so I learned to find something of interest to do when I had difficulity sleeping. I was the moderator on a UNIX web site and would spend my time writing scripts or programs to help people. I would usually get tired after a couple of hours and fall right to sleep. I found that I do better with 3 or 4 hours of good sleep than 8 hours of tossing around.

I have RAGING insomonia that only added to my manic episodes so I DO take a sleeping pill. It's pretty awesome though, metabolizes in four hours and I never feel "hung over". But before I was willing to take a pill, my mom made a lavender spray and I sprayed my sheets with it. It's supposed to help sleep. I always keep the house at 68 or lower Take the hottest shower you can stand before bed And warm milk. If that doesn't work, look into Sonata. It's not too bad really.

For my insomnia, I just changed my thinking. I mean if i could not go to sleep, then I would get up and so something with my time instead of tossing and turning. Tossing and turning in bed was a waste of time for me and just pissed my off and I really did not want to be pissed off because I could not control my body functions. I also changed my thinking to believe that when my body wants to sleep, it will sleep and if I only sleep 2 or 3 hours then that is ALL the sleep my body needs. I trust and listen to my body and then responded to the needs of my body.

I have a natural drug-free technique that mostly works, and may be worth trying: Instead of counting sheep; count your breaths. Take long, slow breaths, and count each exhalation. I don't usually get to 100 (takes about ten minutes), and hardly ever get to two hundred. I think this technique works, because the deep, slow breathing is a good way of making yourself relax, and the counting exercise is mind-numbing.

I usually play a puzzle game online or something where I have to concentrate. It tends to get exhasting when your eyes stay focused on one thing and you have to think. This is also why reading puts some people to sleep.

Its hard to dedicate your self to sleep on ambien because you have to make yourself sleep earlier. What I do is do lots of excersise, take a shower, have a smoke, and sleep with the A/C or fan on while having a thin blanket on me. Works everytime.
