There are some areas of the world where Christians and Muslims have been living peacefully for decades. So I believe it is quite possible and, as far as I can tell it has not caused either group to water down their beliefs.

Your premise is false. Both these religions are violent to their core, and have been the cause of countless wars throughout history.
However, I do not think there is much threat of a war of the kind you suggest at present. Islamic countries simply lack power to prosecute one.
The only real reason Islam takes centre stage is that there is a lot of oil under Islamic soil. Should there be a concerted attempt to threaten the rest of the world, the US, Europe, China and Russia would all wish to squash it totally, and would do so. None of these places are significantly Islamic.

Hmm...what Christians? Half of them are naked animals dancing in pubs. Quarter of them are church people who simply are far away from the modern world...and the remaining quarter are unheard, and a meager percentage is terrorist. Same on the Muslims part, except the situation is improving than worsening. There may be a war, but not because of the radical people. But because of the non-religious people, who will blame the radical people like nowadays.

Islam is shaping up to be the next " King of the north" `
(Daniel 11:40) “And in the time of [the] end the king of the south will engage with him in a pushing, and against him the king of the north will storm with chariots and with horsemen and with many ships; and he will certainly enter into the lands and flood over and pass through.
This prophecy has happened, but the identity of the King of the North has changed somewhat.
The King of the South is the English/American alliance, the extension of the Roman empire.

Kris - this is a fantastic questions.
Both religions boast of peace and love and share some similar principles but they fight over holy ground and land.
I don't think both will ever be able to co-exist. They both feel entitlement to this land and will probably never be able to share. For the radicals (on both sides) too much hate has built up.
It's so sad.

In theory both religions should respect each others beliefs and co-exist, however the human element seems to corrupt good concepts. I think Islam is culturally 400 years behind Christianity and that is why it presents as barbaric and subjugating of women. Christianity is only now really moving from that stage in most circles.

Islam and Christianity are both dangerous lies. Both are intolerant of people who don't believe - they discriminate, preach violence and bigotry. Every major conflict in the world today has, in one way or another, been exacerbated because of someones fanatical religious views.
Bible:
Deuteronomy 13:6-10
If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die.
2 Chronicles 15:13
Whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.
Quran:
Slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out ... if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. 2:191
Slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. 9:5
