i have a 1 year old pit bull who lives outside. i just keep him unleashed in my backyard all day and night, he has plenty food and water and VERY reliable shelter. i dont really take him out for walks because hes not very disciplined, so basically what im saying is that he gets minimal attention throughout the day, i mean i see him when i feed him buts thats it, well in other words i dont treat him like hes lassy, you know what i mean?

Because he is a pit, I would be very concerned that he could develop aggressive, dangerous tendencies. I mean if you had a beagle the risk would be less. (how often do you hear of beagle's mauling people?) But pits develop dominant aggression easily, and because he has little interaction it makes the risk higher. So I would be very, very concerned about the living arrangements right now. If it were another more docile breed, then as long as they were cared for and had some regular attention it would be ok, not great, but ok. Dogs are pack animals and they do better with regular interaction.

All over the nation the owners of dogs who attack people are being prosecuted for crimes ranging from endangering public safety to even manslaughter. You are putting yourself at very great risk of fines and even jail time by having a pit that is not well socialized and trained. Simply because this is a pit, it is really not a good thing for him to be left alone. That decision could cost you your own freedom.

This can be a big problem. First of all, a dog does a lot better job protecting you and your home if he's in it. He can't protect you and your house if he's out back.

Dogs shouldn't be left out all the time. Terrible stuff can happen to them. They're exposed to many diseases, the elements, and even freaks who come along and think it's fun to kill your dog (read some of the awful posts about people stealing dogs out of backyards- there are plenty on Y! Answers. Dogs end up dead or hurt somewhere else.)

The dog will be a better protector and companion if he actually has the time to get to know what he's protecting- you. He will defend you, his friend, more than any guy who just brings him food once a day.

It can be bad for the dog to be in the back all the time for other reasons. You don't want your dog to be unsocialized, especially if he's a pitt. He has to get used to people. You don't want to be the owner of a dog who isn't used to people and possibly hurts someone someday for no reason. It won't make him less of a guard dog to be used to people outside the house. He'll still always know when someone's an intruder.

You should reverse this- bring him inside, get to know him. Let him be part of your family. He will be the best friend you ever had. Try to get him used to people. His being unsocialized is a big problem, especially for a pitt. Good luck.

^^^^Read my mind. Why did you get a dog?

A dog should be a friend first, a protector second, and a "fight dog" NEVER.

If this dog is there to protect, then you really need to get him to obedience classes, because they don't always know when its appropriate to protect. Disturbing territorial behavior could leave you and your dog in a LOT of trouble. Training some basic commands would really help in an emergency... like if he's attacking or chasing someone who wasn't a burglar.

Its good to feel safe on your own property, but what if the police needed to talk to you about some of these neighborhood punk kids, and the dog went for the cop??

Training = Very important.

You knew what kind of answers you were going to get with a question like that. Take your dog to a pit bull rescue so that it has a chance at a real life.

You have no need for the dog since your car is not parked in your back yard and neither are all of your windows.

You are the reason your dog will most likely maul someone someday and they will kill the dog for it. I have no encouraging words like the other people. You should not have any animals.

what about socialization? dogs are a very social animal and long periods of social isolation tend to make a mean dog who doesn't like any one on his territory but there is hope for you spend more time with your dog and Lassie was a movie star treat your dog like you want someone to treat you ask your self this do you want a destructive and aggresive animal that could possibly hurt you or your family?

Why, why, WHY do you even have a dog???? What you are doing to your poor dog is extremely cruel.

Dogs are pack animals. When you bring a dog home, YOU become his pack. When you force him to live outside with no attention from you, he feels BANISHED from the pack and he doesn't understand why. He is confused, lonely, bored and SAD.

ALL dogs should live IN THE HOUSE with their family (with the exception of working sled dogs). If you don't WANT a dog to share your life, WHY have one?

YOU have the power to really change this animal's life. Bring him inside. Take him to obedience class. Play with him, give him attention, take him for walks, LOVE him. If you won't do that, then turn him over to a shelter where he has a CHANCE to be adopted and have a good life.

Dogs are sociable, pack animals, they need to be with other dogs and/or people. It is cruel and abusive physically and mentally to keep a dog outside and by himself. He is aggressive to others because he has not had a chance to learn to socialize, which is not his fault. At this point you absolutely should consult with a qualified, professional POSITIVE dog trainer, or go to a good shelter and ask for their help in trying to socialize the dog. Or consider giving him to a pitbull rescue group.

If you ignore your dog it can become wild almost, like not used to humans and turn on you even. You need to spend some time with your dog, like for a half when you feed it, at least. Your pups still there's still time, wait much longer and it'll be to late. P.S. If you can't spend time with the dog give it to someone who can, and get a car alarm.

Yes .....Go outside and play with him ,show him some attention. Train him basic commands (that can be fun). Then keep training him. I guess he's not socialized either....
Treat him like part of your family (dogs are pack animals), love to be with their family.
Get some balls and other toys like Frisbee and go play with your dog! (TREATS don't want to forget the TREATS)

And bring him in the house no dog should sleep outside!
