Consider the possible recourses for calling in sick or some other reason that you fabricated. Some employers call to check on you and get some indication if they need to plan for someone else to be available to perform your job the following day/s. This perfectly legal.
Consider the fact that someone at work may see you if you go somewhere that day.
Many companies have a policy that if someone is a no show for any reason within the first 30 days of employment they terminate the employee. Also, look at your prior absences from work--have you developed a pattern of not working a full week or a full month.
If you are honest and tell them the truth for not showing up expect them to start looking for a replacement.
There are basically three reasons a company hires someone.
1. The employee solves more problems than they create.
2. The employee makes the company money.
3. The employee does 1 and 2.
It is your life and choice to make, just remember that most choices come with a price.

"I can't get off the toilet. Every time I stand up, I have to go again."
That usually works.
