three men pay for a $30 hotel. they each pay $10. After they get to the room the manager realizes the room was only supposed to cost $25 so he tells the bell boy to go refund the men $5. The bell boy goes up to the room and said, well you cant split $5 between 3 people so he puts $2 in his pocket and gives each man $1. (heres where it get's tricky) since each man payed $10 and got $1 refunded to them each man payed $9. ($9x3=$27+ $2 the bell boy took=$29) so what happend to the extra dollar?

I got it! 8 + 1 = 9, but 25/3 = 8.33

5/3 = 1.66 each

8.33 + 1.66 = 10 (apx)

the boy only took $.66 from each of them.

Each share of $25 was $8.33 +$1 (refund) = $9.33.

9.33 x 3 +28 (apx) + 2 from the boy = 30

***For those of you that don't understand, it wasn't $8 + $1. It was $8.33 + $1. The dollar wasn't missing, he just didn't include the change that occurred when he divided $25 three ways (since 25 is not equally divisible by three) $.33 x 3 = $1 (someone got the extra penny)

I Would Have To Say Those Are just Plain Miscalculations In Math. Its Obvious The Extra Dollar Was Purposely Excluded From The Word Problem/Riddle In Order To Create A Base For The Problem/Riddle and An Objective For It As Well.

Alright...I thought about it and all I came up with was that 30-3=27-2=25 and that ...if they gave the guy 25 then kept the 3 (that the boy gave them) that equals 28 not 27so 28 +2= 30

No, it didn't go anywhere. The three men each paid $9. That makes $27 = $25 for the hotel, and $2 for the bellboy.

The three man should pay $25 for their room,or each one should pay $25/3,not $9.

$25 charged,$3 returned, $2 kept by bellhop.no extra .

Start going through it backwards. I'll say it starts with $30. Subtract 2 (29, 28) then subtract 3 (27, 26, 25) and there you have it.

According to a previous poster 99% of people get this and the questioner is the hundredth. That maths is wrong because 99% leaves 1%, a percentage, not a fraction If the questioner is the hundredth person, then there can only be 99 other people.

I notice that the poster did not explain to the rest of us the answer. Maybe he doesn't know himself?

I admit I don't know the answer. I am looking forward to someone who does know explaining it to us, instead of just criticising the questioner.

I think the 97% of the population don't participate in Yahoo! Answers.

Look at those answers! It's too easy.

Only 3% of the population can be counted on to ask these type of questions. There is NO EXTRA DOLLAR. 25 = 3 + 28. So each man paid 27.33. So wat happened to the "extra" penny!

the $2 remains...the question is how do we get to $28- the multiplication ignores the first $1 inclusive...
