My sister applied for a job today and because she doesn't speak spanish, she was not hired. Last I knew, this was AMERICA, not mexico! Why should we have to learn spanish in our own country to be able to converse with the mexicans? Shouldn't it be the other way around? How dare the mexicans invade america and try to make us speak their language? It is bad enough that most of them are illegaly here. The legal immigrants that I know, at least speak english. Can my sister be able to sue the business for discrimination? By the way, the business is owned by chinese who don't speak spanish. What is up with this picture?

That is another reason that ALL immigrants should be required to speak English. To accommodate a bunch of illegal aliens who refuse to speak English is ridiculous.

An employers has the right to request the job qualification they desire in an employee, the same job description must apply the same to all applicants. If you do not meet the job qualifications you do not get the job, plain and simple! English is not the official language of the United States, it is recognized as the De Fact language of the USA.
The USA has the 5th largest Spanish speaking population in the world following Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Argentina, and USA.
The 5 most spoken languages in the world are as follows.

Chinese (Mandarin) 1,075,000,000
English 514,000 000
Hindustani 496,000,000
Spanish 425,000,000
Russian 275,000,000

PS you can file a complaint with you local EEOC office

JC your wrong English The 2ND most widely spoken , Soon to be replaced by Hindustani for 2nd place.
English has been the language of choice for business , but soon will change to Chinese.

Well, then have her sue them. But does she really know that it was because she did not speak Spanish?...if she has no valid proof then unless the lawyer is a very smart person, there's nothing you can do. I'm Hispanic myself, but I do not believe we as Americans should learn Spanish as this is not Latin America. I do speak Spanish at home and if I'm helping a friend out with their Spanish home work because it's their major etc. I honestly believe and hope that someday we take a vote and make English the officially language so those ungrateful blind sighted morons realize that this is America and whether they like it or not English is what they'll have to learn in order to live and make it here. I think it's sad that they try and battle saying that this is their country. But I believe i survival of the fittest! I do not deny my back ground, but I do not go braggin about it either. I also believe unless you come here legally, you should get you 're as s back to where you came from etc. Don't learn Spanish; and fight to not have this affect you, it shouldn't, thes e loons that come here are just lazy!

At the border states, you have to be bilingual to work at McDonalds. I guess that is why so many Europeans are multilingual because all of those countries are like the states here but all speak different languages. I don't think your sister can sue if it is a requirement of the job to speak Spanish. I wouldn't be surprised if one day soon, Spanish will be a required subject in U.S. schools.

I sometimes wish that the sales person would be required to speak English. I saw a sign once in Chinatown. Applicants needed to speak four languages. THe Chinese Boss probably needs a translator. Evidently, he did bother to learn English. It's a prime reason why older small business is going under in L.A. So many of them went bankrupt, because they do not have the money to hire someone who can understand Spanish and ENglish.

It's a common site in Los Angeles. I get around despite a language barrier. My Filipino Assisant is a bit upset with my Armenian Assistant because he can't communicate to well. It's difficult for me, because so many of my coworkers are foreign born, but I manage. ONe of my Filipino coworkers drive me nuts, because I have to fix his mistake. It's usually chalked up to communication error.

I doubt you can sue. It wasn't that great a job anyways. I know it's unfair, but Hopefully she could find a better job.

Maybe the owner was trying to hire a bilingual worker. Many jobs now are looking for workers that can speak both English and Spanish, because of all the Hispanics that are immigrating to the USA. Don't worry, just tell her to apply for another job.

urgh, I'm sorry to hear that. The same happens where I used to live actually. It's like needing to know the ridiculous language is necessary for everything now >,< I don't know what to do about the chinese/spanish situation... but I'd think that you should be able to sue the business if the need to be bilingual wasn't directly stated in the ad.

If she was applying for a job in Spain, or Mexico it would be expected she speak Spanish. However, this is the United States of America and we speak ENGLISH! If I was your sister, I'd spend a day photographing the ones entering who do speak Spanish there, send the pix to ICE.

That just pisses me off. Employers are going to start using the fact people cant speak Spanish as a reason to pay minimum wage to those who can, no matter how qualified or menial the job is. Way to go people who are in the USA and wont learn how to speak English.

Mexicans are not the only ones that speak Spanish. Latinos are not invading the USA and making us speak Spanish. If your sister has the same attitude as you do towards the Latino community and if major part of there customers are Hispanic I think they did the right decision as business owners not to hire her.

there are plenty of other countries that speak spanish but that's aside the point...think about it that isn't the only thing that makes for awesome discrimination..do you think they would hire a man at a daycare just because he speaks spanish? probably not ...lots' of lame jobs discriminate ...so tell your sister if she's soo american to go for a better job!
