I need to know if the AXOD Transmission from an 88 Taurus will work and run fine in a 96 Taurus. Aside from the 96 having an Electronic control. What is the internal differnce in the transmission and why would it not work? I mean if I where to leave the harness disconnected from the transmission would the non-electronic AXOD out of the 88 run normal? Or would there be other issues? Not sure what else I can add to get my question across. If anyone has done a swap like this I would like to hear from you Thanks.

To answer your question, Mechanically, maybe. It really depends on if you are swapping transmissions from the same motor, and if the bolt pattern is the same.
Functionally, yes it should work, but as I mentioned, it may or may not bolt up. A way you can determine this is through parts common to both vehicles. Look up the Flexplate, torque converter, axles, etc. If you get parts that are the same or at least close physically, then you stand a greater chance.
Electronically, you may be running into a nightmare. The 88 model tranny isn't as computer controlled as the 96, but by 96 they were integrating the systems a whole lot more. You may see problems with driveability related to imporper signals coming from the 88 transmission.
With all that said, I tend to agree with the others in that sticking with the same transmission is gonna be a WHOLE lot less stress. You could look at the local salvage yards or even e-bay, you'd be suprised.

Won't work, more trouble than it's worth. The later AXOD's have a lot of internal improvements that are not in the early ones.

96 and up cars have OBDII emissions controls and the whole car works as a system. I would think the computer would need to know when the car is shifting, etc from the tranny computer.
