Yes one should learn English to live in America, Never !!. that one must give up Spanish or any other language they speak to be an American, I speak English ,Spanish and I am in the process of learning Thai. The person who said you can't go to Mexico if you can"t speak Spanish is so mis informed. Just bring your dollars and you will be understood.
JC only You need to look at you sources.

While it's true that English is our native language, in certain parts of the country (Florida, Texas, California) it's to a persons advantage to know Spanish. No matter what anybody thinks about it, there's a large Spanish speaking population. It's not going away. I personally only know a little Spanish but I could make so much more money in my job if I could communicate with the Spanish speaking population too.

Americans don't HAVE TO know how to speak Spanish. it's just a good idea if you do ,because some ppl of foreign origin ,that are living here now, are still learning ours and it makes it much easier to relate to each other.(English is a b*tch to learn,i'm told . ... one of the very most difficult.we're LUCKY we learned it from the get-go. )

in other words,
from an education/business perspective, it makes sense because, you can reach more ppl with your product.

and on a personal level.. you won't ever have to wonder if they are talking about you, in line. lol.
(teasing... ; )

Peace,
~Laurie :D

ps.. we are getting more and more Asian ppl where I live. I wonder if you can take "Chinese" as a language in HighSchool?

But isn't the Asian Dialect rather diverse between Regions? .. while Spanish stays relatively the Same?

eh.. what do i know. all i know is english. i wish i knew another language. i really would like to learn Spanish. : )

I don't know what the push is to accept Spanish as a second language is anyway. I notice at the local Home Depot they make announcements in both English and Spanish and the self serve check out booth are in both English and Spanish. What is really weird, is that the local Home Depot is in an area with a large Chinese population. There are very few Spanish speaking customers.

Why don't they make the announcements in English and Chinese? Why not have the self serve checkouts in English and Chinese? Why Spanish? It seems we are not trying to accommodate any other foreign language speakers but Spanish. Why?

urgh, I completely agree. It's quite the pain actually. Especially because I used to live down in Miami. It was ridiculous there. Had a hard time even getting a job because I wasn't fluent in Spanish. Or creole, for that matter. I think it's rather sad. One reason why I wouldn't mind moving.. lol. But hey, I took up American Sign Language in high school instead of Spanish. *shrugs* suited me much better. and I was actually happy to learn the language... especially because it wasn't forced upon me to.

You can definitely tell the difference between an American speaking Spanish and a Mexican speaking Spanish. The native vs. non-native accent is present. Also, you can tell the difference in native accents between other speakers of Spanish, such as Colombian Spanish vs. Mexican Spanish vs. Puerto Rican Spanish. Kind of like listening to someone from England vs. someone from the USA. Entiendes?

Um, Jar...your an idiot.

You are allowed into Mexico if you cannot speak Spanish. I drive for a living and delivered a load to Laredo TX last Thursday. Friday I walked into Mexico and enjoyed a nice day there of sightseeing and fine food...and I don't speak a word of Spanish.

As to the question, I agree 100%. Regardless of country of origin, if your going to live here you should learn English.

Well to become a Naturalized American citizen all must speak and know English rather well. I watched all the newly Naturalized citizens repeat in very good English the oath to renounce their countries from which they came from to become Naturalized American citizens on the 4Th of July 2007. Bravo to them all.

Now if the rest would get that and understand that this is the way it is, has been, and always was when immigration laws, requirements, and policies were put into place in America.

I wish to ask everybody a minute of silence in memory of the brutal and senseless murder of the English language made by the asker who couldn't even make sense with the question.
