Steam rollers did it for me! I had a one of those Caruso Molecular Hairsetters (advertised on TV about 20 years ago but still available)...it uses foam rollers to curl your hair. ...and boy did it work on my hair (mostly straight with some waves).

Follow the instructions for spiral curls...it involves grabbing a patch of hair, twisting it into a loose "rope" and then winding the rope around a curler that's been steaming for 30 seconds. Clamp on the cover and use the rest of the curlers...when done, hit it with a blow dryer for a minute, remove rollers, and start on the next section of hair. If you have a lot of hair (mine was very long at the time), a second set of rollers lets you do all or most of your head.

Steam is MUCH better on your hair than irons and the results last a long time (I did it once before a camping trip and still had curls after three days in the woods with no shower!). ...and you're less likely to hurt yourself with the steam rollers (barely hot enough to cause burns and then only if you held your finger over the steam dispenser...the curlers are cool to the touch!).
