Here is my checklist for maintaining speed and freeing-up memory:

1. Set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
-----right-click on the desktop, select Properties
-----click the screensaver tab, on the left where it says "screensaver," select none.
-----click the desktop tab, for background, select none
2. Review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
-----click Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu
-----click the Start Menu tab
-----select a program you do not want to load at Startup, then click remove.
-----Caution -- do not touch anything you are not sure of or you will mess up your computer royally.
3. From Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history. (You can also set days to store history to 0.)
----- These actions will clear your computer’s cache. (For a description of cache, go to http://help.yahoo.com/l/ph/yahoo/mail/access/access-27210.html )
4. Run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
-----These can be found in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
5. Periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — then type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).

These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.

Sounds like you could use a book or two. I buy from Amazon, get used books at a good price and in excellent condition.
You didn't say if you are using XP or Vista, so:

Well you obviously have a problem. most likely a virus or a ton of adware. Try this first go to www.housecall.trendmicro.com and run housecall - It may ask to install some things - let it go ahead and then run the program. It will run (maybe for hours depending on your connection and speed) and then give you a list of what's going on with your system, be it viruses or adware. Then follow the instructions on how to remove the problems. Good luck!!

Mkay, What they are talking about is called a wipe-out and yes It does work if you want to go through all the trouble I would say that you should run some ad-ware scans some anti-spywear some virus scans and then Defrag

Yes, it would be a good thing to do because you are probably full of sypware crap. Let them walk you through the reinsallation - then you better get some good spyware detection on that machine.

Its sometimes a good thing. You clean off all of the spyware and viruses. the bad part is losing pictures, your internet favorites. try to back up what you can.

Its' not bad. It will just earase everything and start from scratch. Remember to run antivirus and such to prevent it from happening again. Just do as they say and it will be fine. I have done it a few times.
