Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday removed restrictions on celebrating the old Latin Mass, reviving a rite that was all but swept away by the liberalizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

The decision, a victory for traditional, conservative Roman Catholics, came over the objections of liberal-minded Catholics and angered Jews because the Tridentine Mass contains a prayer for their conversion.

I think this is a new opportunity to experience the great diversity and variety that the Universal Church offers.

Here is the Pope's letter on the subject: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/letters/2007/documents/hf_ben-xvi_let_20070707_lettera-vescovi_en.html

and now we can add Latin.

One prayer for the conversion of the Jews said once a year can be resolved without too many problems.

With love in Christ.

I love to see the many ways people love and worship God, and I am glad that those people who have a deep love and attachment to the old traditional Latin mass are now permitted to celebrate that way.

I also love to see the way Jews love and worship God, so the "prayer for their conversion" makes me nervous. Since "conversion" means turning around and renewing your faith in God, I hope this prayer simply means we pray that their faith is renewed and not that they should all run out and get baptized. I mean, if they want to get baptized, they are most welcome, but I don't think it's necessary.

Every Good Friday service includes a prayer for the Jews, "God's chosen people." I haven't heard anything about turning them into Christians.

Latin Mass will have no meaning for anyone who doesn't understand Latin, except that the person might feel as if he/she has done something religious.

I can't understand why the Jews should be angry about a prayer for their conversion to a religion that they believe is false. If the religion is truly false, then the prayer won't be answered.

there is no problem with the renewing of the latin mass for those that choose this form of devotion. i can't understand which Jews it angers.... when i was going to Auschwitz & Berkenau I asked a friend if he would ask his rabbi for a prayer or devotion i could take with me for my time there. the rabbi new i was Catholic and the prayers itself spoke of asking God to help a spirit of unity grow among all religions of God.

from a purely aesthetic point of view, Latin mass sounds a lot better since they can't ramble as much as they'd like to.
Being raised Jewish, I am slightly offended, but I don't think it's going to have a huge impact.
