Stereotypes are rooted in hatred and bigotry. And nothing else--including excuses like "personal pain or experience." There is no excuse for prejudice.

Religious stereotypes come from personal experience, and sometimes that involves pain. I've had many bad experiences with Fundamentalists and Evangelicals. Therefore, I am going to naturally assume that all other Fundies and Evangelicals are going to be the same way. But that could just be in the Bible Belt. Yes, you are correct.

You know, it could be the result of someone's pain or mistreatment, but this is often passed on from generation to generation, long after the real insults have played out.

Conflict and stereotypes are often the results of generation teaching generation -- some truths and mistruths. For a prime and scary example of this, take a moment to watch what recently aired on Hamas TV:

Of course there are examples on the other side as well.

I think that fear and prejudice which leads to stereotyping, is passed from generation to generation. Just like poverty, someone has to work to break the chain of prejudice just like someone has to work to break the chain of poverty.

One of the ways humans feel better about themselves is to make others appear less important. In it's most destructive form, one group dehumanizes another group - much in the way Hitler and his henchmen (and women) dehumanized the Jews. Prejudice is also stupid - had Hitler embraced the Jewish community, they would have been loyal and that monster might have been able to win WWII.

So, in the words of Forrest Gump's mother - stupid is as stupid does. Prejudice and negative stereotyping is always stupid (and costly to society).

God bless.

Yes sometimes. For eg. In gujrat, a lot of women of Muslim families were killed and raped and the men just went crazy......

U know, anyone normol will do that. I mean, all the docs said it was normal.

But sometimes, religious stereotypes comes because of their overly feeling "of righteousness". For eg, v have a member here on R&S who keeps calling crusade for all non-Christians... I mean, this is just a bit childish!

I think it depends...a stereotype can be something someone picked up own their own via an experience, personal or not, or it can be from an attitude in their family toward a group that they were raised thinking. Yes and no.

You know there's always some truth to every stereotype. Whether people want to admit it or not.
