The cross was a form of torture that the Romans used. So if Jesus lived in todays time, maybe an electric chair would be the sacred symbol for an entire religion.

To understand how the cross became the symbol of Jesus' death, you must first read the scriptures and see how the apostle Paul frequently referred to Jesus death instrument as being symbolic of his sacrificical death. Also, how the despised instrument became a symbol of hope and redemption. (1 Cor.1:18, Gal.5:11, Gal 6:12-14; Eph 2:16, Col. 1:20, Col. 2:14).

Obviously it took centuries for the "cross" to become associated only with Jesus' sacrifice and develop the symbolic significance that came to be associated with it. If Paul had called the good news about Jesus the "word about the electric chair", it's possible that in time the electric chair would have developed the same symbolism as the cross. But Paul didn't say that, did he?

It is a great comparison. It helps modern people who are so used to the cross as a symbol to understand what it was a symbol of. Yet even so it might be argued that today at least we have due process of law and a certain degree of concern for humaneness even in cases of capital punishment. The torture and execution of Jesus was, among other things, what we today would call an atrocity and a human rights violation.

I sometimes wonder what Jesus would think if he came back and saw a cross on everyone's neck, and another on every wall. Do you think that day is really something he would want to be constantly reminded of?

of course we are aware that the cross was a torture device. The fact that Jesus would suffure like that for us is why it became a symbol of our religion.
