What Does Iwo Jima Mean

2017-01-15 06:44:50 · answer #2 · answered by adel 4 · 0 0

Provided my memory serves me correctly, Iwo means 'Sulfur' and Jima (like Shima) means 'Island' or 'Rock." And just several weeks ago, the people of Japan (who own that particular Island) have renamed it Iwo To And Iwo To, was its original name before being mistakenly called Iwo Jima by several naval officers of the Japanese Imperial Navy, just prior to the U.S. invasion.

It has nothing to do with marines, except for their part in taking it from the Japanese.
It is Japanese for "sulfur island". The Japanese used it for a lookout to spy on the Americans. They could see American ships and planes and have advance warning of possible impending attacks. So, by taking it from the Japanese, the Americans had a better chance of attacking the Japanese unknowingly.

I don't think you have to be a Marine to answer this question.
I was Navy. But I also speak some Japanese.

I think someone who speaks Japanese is better suited to answer your question regardless of what branch of the military he/she served in (Or even if they served.)
