I'm a teenager, and for the past month I've been having chest pains. It will only happen twice a week, if that much, and only for 2-3 minutes. When I breathe in, I feel a very sharp pain near my heart. For it to go away, I feel like something is moving in my chest, like if you've ever rubbed your elbow or knee on a hard surface and felt the cartiledge moving. Sometimes that happens on its own, but sometimes I have to breathe in really deeply (so it hurts a lot) for it to go away. Any ideas??

Yes, unfortunately teens and kids have these problems sometimes, too. My 14 yo son has to have yearly checkups with a cardiologist due to minor congenital heart defects. Nothing serious, just have him checked yearly.

It may be something as simple as a cracked rib, which taked a long time to heal, and nothing can be done for the rib. A fractured rib can cause a great deal of pain for several months, depending on location and severity of the break.

Tell your parents you'are having some troubles, and need to see a doc to be on the safe side. Good luck.

It really would be best to see the doctor for this. It probably is nothing at all, even maybe a pulled muscle. The doctor, however, would be able to tell you more and help relieve any anxieties you may have about the feelings you are experiencing. Besides a pulled muscle, sometimes there is a virus that causes a build-up of fluids around the heart (I think it is called pericarditis). I had my son checked once, when he also had pains, and this is what they thought he had. I don't know what the possible effects are, from this, but again the doctor could better advise you. I do remember that my son (about 10 or 11 at the time) was directed to go to the doctor's right away - just to eliminate any unusual things. So . . . call the doctor and see what he thinks. He will tell you if you need to go in, or not.

From what you are saying, it sounds a lot like a condition I have as well. What you are probably referring to is costochondritis, where the cartilage between your ribs and sternum gets inflamed (for no good reason). This condition causes moderate to severe pain and some people explain the pain as feeling like they are having a heart attack or feeling like there is something wrong with their lungs. The pain with breathing is very common in patients with costochondritis and tylenol or ibuprofen can help.

Good Luck! :)

I think it's time you had a doctor's visit. I'm an adult and I have something similar. My doctor said it was asthma and prescribed inhalers to help. I felt shortness of breathe. Also, you could be stressed too and have anxiety attacks. Being a teenager sometimes is rough. Let your parents know about this and get it taken care ASAP. Feel better.

What have you been eating lately? It could be gas. If you are really concerned go to the emergency room.

that doesn't sound to good. have you talked to your parents about it? ask them to take you to your physician, it sounds like it needs to be checked out.
