What type of dog? There are several breeds that "grumble" when they are being pet. I use to have a Rottie that would give off this low, guttural, grumble every time anyone would rub his lower back! He just loved it! Until I would explain what it was, it would make people nervous! I always explained it as it was his way of "purring"!

Dogs have a keen sense of smell..they may not like the scent the stranger(or whoever is petting him) is giving off.He may smell fear or hate or even another animal that he doesn't like.

Just tell the other person to put his hand up under your dogs nose so the dog can smell the person and if he still growls...time for your company to back off.Never try and forcefully pet the dog...he may just not like the other person.Even humans dont like everyone they meet.

I suggest you talk to your veterinarian. Your dog may be aggressive and ofcourse very protective of you that's why it reacts that way to strangers. I would not advise you to kick your dog. This might make him react even more aggressively. Until you talk to your veterinarian, I suggest that you keep strangers away from your dog. You certainly don't anyone getting a dogbite which would cause problems. I don't think you can easily break your dog from this habit until you talk to a professional like your vet. Dogs are great companions so I wish you luck in solving this!

Is he growling, making doggy conversation, or is he telling people he doesn't want to be touched? Is his tail wagging? Are his teeth bared?

Either way, it sounds like instinct to me, but who am I? Not a dog trainer, certainly. Ask a trainer, but in the meantime, unless you can certainly say that this dog will never ever be aggressive, I'd not let people touch him. What kind did you say he was? Poodle or pit bull?
