For a couple who aren't having a large wedding, already share a home, and expecting a baby. What would an appropriate engagement gift be for such a couple?

Its very nice of you to want to buy them an engagement gift. Honestly, gifts for engagement aren't necessarily the norm, so it probably isn't expected. However, since you want to be extra generous, a gift card to a favorite restaurant of theirs so they can relax during all the stress of planning a wedding would be lovely. Also, engagement photos are something many couples would like to do, but are difficult to fit in the budget. You could buy them a portrait sitting with a good photographer so they can have nice engagement photos for the newspaper and other engagement announcements. Maybe a nice picture frame engraved with a nice message and the date they became engaged. Whatever you choose, it is the thought that counts and something small yet thoughtful is more than enough.

Engagement gifts aren't necessary at all. Just take a card.

Find out where they like to shop. Ask their parents, relatives or close friends. A gift card is probably a good idea.

I suggest a good gift is for you to offer to babysit the little one and give them a certificate for dinner at a place that they love and haven't had a chance to go to in awhile and make sure that there is a bottle of wine there for them..

Well, something that they could use for their home obviously. Maybe some new crystal glasses? or a Visa gift card so they can pick.
