I think this thing is called a potentiometer but I'm still not sure. I need a button that works of the amount of pressure applied, ex. the harder i push the more energy is applied to the object. If anyone could tell me what they are and where I could get one that would be G-R-E-A-T!

A potentiometer is a three terminal variable resistor. Each end of its resistance element goes across a voltage source and a variable arm touches the resistor to pick off a fraction of the voltage. For example if the arm is halfway across then usually half the voltage is available. If that voltage is used to power something then turning that arm provides more or less power. If the arm is turned by a gearing mechanism (rack and pinion for example) then as the rack is pushed it turns the pinion and twists the arm to get a fraction of the total available power.

Potentiometers are common and are relatively cheap. They come in a variety of total resistances and may have a resistance lement shaped so that the output is linear with rotation os so that it follows a logarithmic curve.

Early versions were two terminal devices that were less efficient. They had a connection at one end and the other connection to an arm that would give a fraction of the total resistance. They used up more power as heat but were cheaper. The Allen-Bradley controls company that now is part of Rockwell was started by the Bradley brothers to make a variable rheostat to slow down electric motors in factories.

The potentiometer is a variable electrical resistance, as the previous answerer has discussed in detail. The actuator on a pot is usually a shaft that is capable of being turned about 3/4 of a circle, although some are multi-turn. What you are asking for is a force transducer. To turn a pot into a force transducer you need to rig up a spring that is compressed, extended, or torqued as the pot shaft is turned, so that turning the pot further requires more force against the spring.. You could also rig up a dimmer switch with an arm and a spring load to do the same thing. The dimmer switch has a pot in it as well as other electronic components to end up efficiently supplying a variable voltage across the electrical load.

I thought about just this morning, non-believers, and why. Well I came up with a ideal for you nonbelievers to ponder. We are made of something. Inside that something is a nucleus, what determines when it will die. Because we degin to die once we are born. Something control the DNA of that, right. We are technology minded animals, far above any other animal known to man. What decided that, or who? Where your mind wonders no one knows but the person that possess it. That's why everyone has a mind of their own. No two people think alike. No matter what one wants to believe. Inherent factors are one thing, your upbring is another. It has a lot to do with your thoughts and emotions. Strengths are rooted accordingly. You seem like a lonely person, are either a Hippocratic if you believe you don't need a skettet to cook in. We are not a island and therefore can't live alone in this world. Not that we choice to lean on others or get disappointed in life, we all do. The absence of reciprocal expectations from is unrealistic. One must depend upon self to get out of life their desires. Some leave this world every day with desires unfilled. That's life! We all have to have hope in something or someone, and I'm sure you do. Change your thoughts and it will change your life. Silver Birch
