My friend has a mother who was living in California the last she heard. My friends mother was mentally ill and received social security. My friend is 37 years old and hasn't seen her mom in over 21 years. She asked her mother's sister if her mom was still alive and her aunt told her " As far as your concerned she's dead" My friend really wants to know if her mom is still living or not. If her mom is dead, she wants to give her a proper burial. She is pretty upset with her aunt for not telling her the truth about her mom. Her aunt is the only person who knows the where abouts of her mom. How would she go about finding out the truth?

She should tell her aunt she needs to know for her own piece of mind. She is 37, a grown woman, what can her mom do to hurt her now. The aunt needs to lighten up.

Every county has a dept. of vital / death statistics. Also, your friend should just start being a detective and call various state agencies- like social security- and start asking questions.

I believe that your pal would have the right to know, being a relative and all. She could probably go to authorities and check it out. Or she could apply pressure on her aunt.

She might check the Social Security Death Index and see if she is listed.

If you go on line on a service such as lexis.com, you can search for someone by their name and birthday. If they are dead, it will come up as a social security administration death file.
