I recently bought a package of sliced prosciutto in the lunchmeat aisle of my local grocery store. I was thinking of tearing up the slices and adding them to cold pasta salad. But then it occurred to me that I have never eaten the stuff before, and I have no idea what I am doing. So, what I want to know is, do I have to cook it first before consuming, or can it be eaten right out of the package?

More often than not prusciutto is eaten cold in an antipasto, which is meat and veggies usually drizzled with olive oil and fresh herbs and served as an appetizer before dinner or sometimes part of the dinner. Prosciutto is good hot or cold. It's great on sandwiches, too!

Prosciutto is a cured meat. It isn't cooked but, since it is cured it can be eaten straight from the package and is actualy better that way.

The traditional method of curing prosciutto is by cleaning a ham, rubbing it with salt, then placing it in a press to squeeze the moisture out. After that the ham is washed several times and then hung for a time period between 4 and eighteen months. The Spanish make a simlar ham called Serrano, although I think the taste is not anywhere near as good as that of prosciutto.

I do that all of the time, but I soft cook them and chill straight away as they will remain yolky. The term should be hard cooked them not hard boiled as that indicates to boil them and not reducing the heat to a simmer. Store the cooked ones in the door, and the rest in the carton or tray on the shelf like you should store them. You must have had devilled eggs or or a slice of bacon and egg pie cold. If you were to nuke them in the shell they will explode and if you peeled them first they will go rubbery

You can eat it right from the package. Prosciutto is actually "raw" pork product that has been cured so it is safe to eat.

It's already cooked. You can eat it out of the package.

Strictly speaking, prosciutto means "ham" in Italian; it generically refers to the pork cut, and not to its specific preparation. Italian speakers therefore make a distinction between prosciutto crudo (literally, "raw ham"), the cured ham which English speakers refer to as simply "prosciutto", and prosciutto cotto ("cooked ham"), which is similar to what English speakers would call "ham". By default, in Italian menus (typically in pizzerias) an unqualified "prosciutto" normally refers to "ham" ("prosciutto cotto"), whereas "prosciutto crudo" is sometimes referred to as "crudo". so its ham..buy, open and enjoy
