We are invited to our neighbor’s cocktail party for their son’s engagement, and they specifically said that no gift is needed. This is the first time we are going to this kind of party and would like to have some advice on what we should ware and what we should bring with? No jokes, please! Thanks!

Take a bottle of wine for the couple to enjoy at a later date.
Where is the party?
If it's at their house I say slacks and a broadcloth shirt for
the men,Ladies know what to wear.
If it's at a restaurant or hall, i'd say jacket and tie, not a suit. Ladies, again, you know what to wear .Have fun!
I think a quick call to your hosts would be acceptable to find out what people are wearing, in general terms.

I think the champagne is a great idea for a gift. Put it in a gift bag with a gift tag with your names.

Man--wear a collared shirt (golf shirt or an oxford cloth button-down, no tie, or even a print shirt) and a sports jacket. Around here you can wear nice jeans (being on the casual side) linen or khaki pants. You will be comfortable if the others are very casual by taking off the jacket.

Woman--nice slacks (black always works) or skirt and any sort of pretty top. As long as it's not a t shirt, just about anything that is pretty will do. Earrings or a scarf, nice sandals, etc.

I wouldn't try to overdress but be comfortable and hit somewhere in the middle.

Now that depends, George. I've seen people use the term "cocktail party for son/daughter engagement" quite loosely @ times. Some turned out to be nothing more than a beer blast complete with kegs. Others were nearly formal events. Suffice it to say I always went semi formal, i.e. tie & jacket. Also, who is "we" ? I've seen that be anything from the normal couple to the gang from the garage or from the frat house. Regardless of the fine attire I adorned, I still exploited the oppurtunity to become falling down hammered each & every time.
