A rescue or a reputable breeder. Avoid pet shops like the plague. Also be very, very wary of newspaper and web ads. There are people who advertise there who know little to nothing about their breed, and aren't willing to help you along the way.

How will you kn ow a reputable breeder?
First off, they will know what their breed's standard is. You can find the standards for all AKC recognized breeds at www.akc.org. They will know what genetic problems are possible in the breed, and will test their dog's genes to try to avoid or eliminate these problems. They aill ask you a ton of questions, and be very concerned abut what kind of home you will give their pup. They will insist on you spaying/neutering any pups that aren't meant to be shown or bred. They will take back one of their pups at any time for any reason. They will have a contract that tells you this. They will show their dogs, or work them in the job the dog is bred to do. If the person trying to sell you a dog doesn't do any of these things, DON'T buy the dog. Usually a national breed club will have contacts for both reputable breeders and rescues. Look them up online and ask for advice. This will help you to find the perfect new pet and avoid some of the heartbreak of getting a poorly bred, sickly pup. Good luck!!!

Aside to Erkwist:
People who have a USDA license are usually profit only motivated mass breeders. Most reputable breeders only have a local kennel license or don't have enough dogs to require a license. :-)

The best thing to do is to decide what breed you are looking for... then research the breed and talk to breeders. I do not suggest you get any puppy from a pet store as more dogs have health problems from pet stores than from breeders. Reputable breeders normally give some sort of health guarantee and if you should decide you no longer want the dog, they tend to have a home again policy which means they will take the dog back and find it a suitable home to go to. Reputable breeders have strict guidelines as to how they raise the puppies, and can give you pedigree backgrounds and will have at least one parent on site so you have some idea of how the puppy will look when it's older and you can judge the temperment more easily. What kind of dog are you looking for and maybe I can help you find a good breeder....

If you go the breeder route (I'd recommend rescue), check with your local dog training club to see if they've had any experience with this breeder. A woman in my training class got a golden puppy form a breeder in the area that turned out beautiful dogs and had an impressive site.

She found out too late that this breeder is known in the dog training community for not breeding healthy dogs. Her golden is already showing signs of hips problems (he's about a year old) and probably won't live past three because of heart problems.

you could no longer discover valid comprehensive breeds for unfastened. (and that they do no longer deliver domestic dogs.) in case you like an entire blood with papers it incredibly is maximum suitable to bypass to a reputeable breeder. be sure to analyze your breeder thoroughly to make certain you're no longer getting a pup mill canines. there are diverse blended breeds that are in elect of homes which you will get from the poun, ASPCA or Human society. you additionally can come across a organic bread that became no longer needed. those agencies make adoptions attainable at a minimum value. additionally examine along with your community breed rescue team. Many rescue communities artwork with adopting particular breeds. unfastened domestic dogs are almost by no ability purbred and diverse circumstances have wellness subject concerns, or weren't vaccinated and die of Parvo. I advise to be very careful whilst identifying on a canines.

A purebred puppy should always come from a responsible breeder..one who does genetic health testing, researches pedigrees, either shows or has their dogs evaluated to make sure they meet breed standard, etc. Go to the AKC site and find the listing for kennel clubs in your area contact them and they can put you in touch with responsible, ethical breeders.. you can also contact breed rescues they often have puppies and young dogs. do NOT buy from newspapers, websites, pet stores and the like...

i would definatley go to a well known and noted breeder. It is not safe to go out on a whim and buy a dog from a petstore. it is very risky because FULL breed dogs can have serious genitic issues. It may cost more but in the end you will save alot of $ by avoiding extensive vet work. Hope you enjoy your puppy!!!

Adopt from a rescue centre! A young adult or older dog. You find purebred and mixed breed at a rescue shelter. Rescue dogs are alot cheaper than breeders and pet store dogs and also look at the shelter, not just what is available online, because there is only a small section of dogs available online! many more available in the shelter. It is NONSENSE that a rescue shelter is expensive. we get my two young adult rescue cats $85 australian dollars each, a 2yr old& 18month old! The puppies are dearer to cover the cost of the desexing and worming, yet rescue puppies are still cheaper than pet store and breeders.

Adult rescue dogs will say whether they get along well with other cats, whether they don't get along with cats, they'll say whether they get along with children, whether they get along well with older children

I prefer going to the home of a family with pets. I would never buy from a large scale breeder. Dogs should be pets not livestock. Here is a link to all the state's newspapers in the USA. Click on your state, and then click on newspapers in your state near where you live. Check for the breed you would like to have in the classified sections.

Believe it or not, you can get tons of purebred puppies on petfinder.com. They are rescued, so they usually come with all their shots and were saved from being put down. My sister got a purebred chocolate Doberman that way. Just have a look- you'll be surprised at how many cute puppies are there.

Check the AKC website, you can figure out what kind of dog you are looking for, and you can locate breeders in your area.
