As the other posters mentioned, it really depends on the level of website you need... Here's how I would break it down for you..

The basics every site needs:

- Domain name : $6 ~ $10 (godaddy.com) / year
You should make sure you buy the name to control ownership

- Web hosting: $50 ~$100 /year , this is where your site will live
----------------------------------------------------
The above you probably can get yourself.. Then it depends on what you need.

- Just a few page "brochure Style Site" , post an ad on Craigslist for a designer/web it should run you $100 ~$300

- A more full featured site, more page(s) , contact forms, etc. $500~$1000

- An E-commerce site where you can sell stuff , typically $1500+ , plus monthly maintenance fees ($~50/month) maintain creadit card processing capability. Yahoo store is a good starting point for this...

- A complete Web application and complex ecommerce site. Hundres of page(s) , product reviews . This requires you to hire a web development firm with experience in these sites , the cost is likly in the $1000's..

I work for acompany that does this email me if your interested in more details.

There are many variable: Do you need a domain name? Will you be needing lots of space as well as bandwidth? Are you looking for a design in HTML or something fancier such as Flash? Will you need a shopping cart for your business?
Its possible to do the entire thing yourself, and for free if you know the right outlets. (see links below) but generally a well designed site can be in the hundreds.
Hosting/Domain
Http://www.bravenet.com - includes free and cost hosting packages that will include domain names as well as add-ons you can use. They also provide click-and-build designs which makes it painless to have your site up and running in no time.
http://www.netfirms.com also includes free and cost effective hosting, but you need to have a design made. there are no click-and-build. its compatible with Frontpage and has a web-based file manager you can use too. They also provide a merchant host package that has click-and-build features (costs though)
http://www.paypal.com offers HTML you cut/paste into your site to make 'buy me' buttons. It can be a bit tedious if you have a lot in the way of inventory/services, but if you offer only a few things, this is a great choice.
http://www.auctionmessenger.net/paypal/ is an add on to Frontpage you can easily make 'buy me' buttons with frontpage

To have someone build a site for you or your company usually starts at about $250 and can go as high as $2500 or more depending on what you want on the website and what you want the website to do. You also want to consider having SEO (search engine optimization) done as the website is built. Some designers can do SEO for you and some will have it done by someone else.
