ok. it's summer. the windows and doors are all open so the house doesn't get so hot. i'm TRYING to build up longer endurance and higher range...but of course it sounds like a dying goose. needless to say MY NEIGHBORS DON'T LIKE IT. is there a device or something you can MUFFLE the sound with without changing it? (like not a strait mute or harmon mute...cuz they change the sound of the note)

Yamaha makes a silent trumpet mute device. It has much less back pressure than a normal mute and allows you to practice without offending anyone. It might be worth trying out.

Here's the real deal though. Every neighborhood has "Quiet Hours." You aren't allowed to play after ten P. M. in most areas, or before somewhere between six and eight A. M.

Find out what your local ordinances say, and as long as you are within them, you should be able to play at a reasonable volume with no legal implications. This also depends on the relationship your parents have with those neighbors of course, but if they keep bugging you and you are within the law, you have a right to file a complaint against them for harassment!

Try practicing in the basement. It's cooler and more sound insulated. And watch it with the neighbors. Read this article http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1183883794287330.xml&coll=2
If you are still at the "dying goose" stage then it's noise to them. And btw the neighbors don't like it because it disturbs them- NOT because they're "old and cranky" -
In my city you have to be quiet after 7 year round save summer when it is 9 pm. Call your Police Dept's non-emergency no. and ask them what the rules are. It's going to be XXX-1234 - it almost always is "1234" -
The mute that the answerer ccconsul (or whatever his id was) sounds good. Get it. But beware that if they complain to the Police about it they are NOT harassing you. It is not unreasonable to ask for quiet in a neighborhood. Since you're the one producing the "offending" sound, you have to be sure you are on the right side of the law here.
OR! Go practice in a bomb shelter! :P

Face the fact you do have to keep the peace! You also have to be aware of noise laws that being said .Strike up a bargain with your neighbors saying in a nice way you have to practice. What is the best time . When ,where and what days of the week to be fair to everyone.

It depends on a few things. What time of day or night do you practice? Night time or early morning is unfair to your neighbors. Also, why don't you close your windows and doors when you practice? After all you're not going to be practicing all day.

I have a friend who would love you to practice at her house in the morning, as payback to the all night parties her neighbors have been having...their music is very annoying.

Blow your trumpet loud and proud. Its not like a car coming down the road with load music @ 2am. They can live with it.
