Please help us settle this. My husband and I are trying to teach our 17 year old son that flip flops are not safe to wear while driving. They're not secure on your feet and may get stuck between the gas and the brake peddle. My husband suggested that he wear topsiders instead.

These were cool for preppies 25 years ago, but I don't think they're still cool now. Do teenagers still wear them? Of not, what can you suggest he wear that is more secure for his feet and still be trendy.

After looking at the shoes in the weblik provided, I can say they're cool-loking, even though I've never worn them. If they're not in style now, I'm sure some hipster can bring them back into style. After all, 60's fashion DID come back for a while.

I'm sure those shoes would be trendy if Avril Lavigne wore them.... LMAO!

It is totally a matter of where you live and what your social circle is. Yes, the preps still wear them and look like they might know how to sail even if they've never been near a boat in their lives.

I don't think the topsider does as well with earthy-hippy types, and I've never seen a pair in a hip-hop video.

Crocs? (I hate those ugly things.)
Hiking sandles such as made by Teva?
Vans No School slip-ons? Probably the coolest looking!

Since my teen years were the height of the preppy craze, I admit still finding it sexy to see a guy with topsiders and no socks.

I don't think they are trendy but my husband wears them. He wore them to school when we were first married and got made fun of a little. He says they are very comfortable though.

I wear flip flops all the time even though my dad always tells me not to. Its better than heels! I have never had a problem driving in flip flops.

Heck yes, I live in south texas and me and my gf got a pair .A whole bunch of friends had pairs before me and i meet new people with them, alot of us get Sperry's. I dont know where you live but in my area its never been considered out. I'm 17 and i'm usually wearing topsiders or flip flops, when i drive i just take my flip flops off drive barefoot, its easier and comfortable. Lemme know if it helps

I never see guys wear them and wouldn't talk to a guy if they were wearing them. Tell him to wear tennis shoes or take off his flip flops while he drives. Nothing can get in the way if you have nothing on. He can put them back on before he gets out of the car.

It would depend on the type. I know lots of guys who wear this style.

It all depends on your local trends, but the above listed ones seem to be okay just about everywhere. Also it would depend on what you're wearing with them, I would assume.
Even just a pair of slipons that he could change out of easily before getting out of the car would be better than flipflops, i know it might seem like a hassle but it would be worth a shot.
