Detroit has been plagued with some problems recently, but it does have a very attractive cost of living (the median home price last year was something like 155K), they do have quite a bit in the way of arts and culture, and the area does have a pretty diverse economy, but there are some mixed ideas on the future outlook of the local economy. Downtown Detroit has experienced some decay, but the suburbs to the west are pretty attractive and are laid out in a grid.
The weather there is great, too... if you like long, cold, snowy winters. Summers can be hot and humid, but late spring and early fall are usually fairly comfortable. We're talking about a palce where the first freeze is usually in October and the last is in late April, on average.
Unemployment is somewhere around 9%, or so, if I'm not mistaken, and recent job growth is in the negative, rather than positive. I, personally, wouldn't want to live anywhere NEAR Detroit, but I'm sure some people find it to be a very nice place to live.
On the plus side, Detroit isn't anywhere nearly as crowded as Los Angeles.
But then, I wouldn't want to live in L.A. either. I hope this helps you, whatever your eventual decision is.

I got a laugh out of your question. Here is the one benefit of Detroit: really cheap housing. But that's because unemployment is so high, lots of people can't pay mortgage.
My mom was born and raised in Detroit and moved out here as a young woman. Her sisters use to call her all the time "when are you moving back to Detroit; the change of seasons is so beautiful; it's so pretty when it snows". My mom would say, well, the leaves changing colors is pretty, but snow only looks pretty for a day then it gets dirty and ugly and you have to shovel it and it's really wet and cold. I'll stay in California, thank you.
Well, this went on for years. As soon as my aunts and their husbands retired, they bought mobile homes, and then came to spend 3 months every winter parked in front of our house! In all that time, aside from funerals, my mom only went back to visit Detroit once or twice, for no more than 5 days at a time "too depressing".
By the way, Detroit is well known for having Garbage Strikes. Think about it.

nicely the East Coast has its advantanges. you have Ohio which has the excellent thrill coasters park in the international (Cedar element) in Sandusky. then you definitely've Canada which has Windsor and playing. then you definitely've problematic working human beings who preside in this region. low-cost residing by out. then you definitely've the great Lakes that are good for boating, entertainment and Lake effect snow. good success
