But they did not give me a paper pr anything that says that I applied. I don't even have a receipt for the credit card transaction. How will I know when to pick it up?

It will be mailed to you, but do not believe it will be within 4-6 weeks. There is a serious backlog in the passport offices. It may take several months (12-16 weeks) or more!

They should be mailing it to you. 10 years ago my son applied for his passport in Rio Rancho, New Mexico at the post office. He paid his fees and gave them his original birth certificate as they requested. They lost everything and he never recieved his passport. He made a formal complaint and they gave him a temp. good for only 6 months passport .His birth certificate was lost or stolen. It was insane because everything was in the hands of the US passport agent. It makes you wonder who is using his birth certificate.

it will be send to you in the mail anywhere between 4-6 weeks depending on how busy the passport agency is. usually it takes less time.
they normaly don't give you any paper stating that you applied for a passport unless you ask for a receipt.
