I am installing a Pioneer DEH 1300 cd player in a 96 Mercury Grand Marquis. The cd deck requires 45 watt or more speakers but I don't know the specs on the factory speakers.

I wouldn't worry about it; I very rarely see problems with stock speakers after an after-market deck install. Keep in mind that if you tend to listen at the same volume as you did with the stock radio, then the speakers will be getting the same amount of power as they did with the stock deck. You don't have to worry unless you intend to play the system louder than you could with the factory radio; and even then you'd probably be okay.

That's not to say that there's no reason to upgrade your speakers; you'd probably get better sound with an after-market speaker than with the stock 6x8"s.

Most likely yes... I used to work in a car stereo shop...
Most factory speakers can maximum handle 12-15 watts.
Surprisingly factory head units only put out a maximum of 10 watts per channel. If you put a deck in that pumps out 45 watts, When you crank it you will hear distortion. Do Not Turn It Up Past That. You will blow them. I recommend changing them. I did 2 grand marquis and they arent that difficult. I recommend going with volfenhag speakers for them. They hold up nicely and will tolerate a maximum of 420 watts depending on the size.

I wouldn't think so as long as you put the LOUD adjustment on med or low or off and keep the Base away. Also if you try to put an amp to them I wouldn't send any more than about 25 watts to each one and always have your LOUDS on you're deck off and your' gains turned down to the minimum when hookin up. Ground everything before you hook up the power to the deck, then turn up the deck and adjust your fader and base and louds slowly.. should be all good Just start out minimum and slowly dial it in..

Not to worry Ford (which makes your car) has good sound systems. Your speakers will hold up just fine.
