Which one has a better life quality? Which one is closer to Manhattan? Which one is scary if any?

Hoboken has better quality of life. Union City might be considered scary - if you are not hispanic or you don't like being mugged.

Everything in and around NYC is based on money. Look at two apartments that are the same size/quality and it will be 50% more expensive in Hoboken compared to Union City. So that means most people feel hoboken is better. It is easier to get to NYC from Hoboken (path, ferry, bus and train are there), so that might be why. Some people do not think Union City is safe at all. It is ok, but Hoboken is safer.

Hoboken is closer only because of the path and ferry.
Union City is fine. My old secretary lived there and worked in Hoboken and she was always happy.
