If a room is rectangular, is the length the longer and the width the shorter side of the room?

Yeah the length is the longest part of the room and the width is the shorter distance. Just use a tape measure, but make sure you get someone to help you. Put the tape measure against the wall on the floor and pull it along to the other side, keeping it straight. If you want the measurement of the full circumference of the room, you can put a piece of string against the wall and walk around the room with it, then measure the string.

With a laser measuring tape. The old fashioned way was to walk it off. Yes to the second (hidden) part of ur question

Yes, and if you do not have a tape measure for an approximate value, your arm spread is about the same as your height, so if you are about 6 foot tall spread your arms and do a rough measurement of the wall.

really doesnt matter which one u call the length or width.....only when figuring carpet u would figure the best way to run it for less waste...same with hardwood......but if u need to figure the sq ft of a room and dont have a tape..just step it off......long reg steps is about 3 ft........
