American Cocker spaniels are a lot like English Cocker spaniels. They tend to be very stubborn and NOT too intelligent . Most are fear biters. The English Cockers have hair like the cocker spaniel only not as thick but it still matts up easily. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are wonderful with children. Same with the English toy. Both the English toy and the Cavalier are extremely easy to train and have wonderful temperaments and are naturally well mannered. Both English Toys and Cavaliers have hair like a golden retriever. Both breeds shed moderately all year long but more during the Spring and summer as most other breeds do. Really the only difference between the two breeds is that the English toys's have the pug noses and the cropped tails. Which having the pug nose makes them more prone to breathing problems and they become overheated easily. They are actually bred from the same heritage. The Cavaliers were bred to have the longer noses. The English toy was once called the "King Charles Spaniel" but then was later changed to the English toy after the Cavalier King Charles was developed in 1923. The Cavalier are known to having heart problems but as long as you're careful with which breeder you get them from you'll be alright as all breeds all have some kind of genetic problem that can be bred down to them .

No real life experience with any of the other spaniel breeds except Springers but I have never once met a mean Cavalier at a dog show. They are adorable little dogs. Perhaps some of the others have experience with the other breeds.

Cavalier KCS are really sweet, and the only disadvantage I know about them is that heart problems are rather common in the breed due to a small gene pool. You want to make sure your breeder has them guaranteed against this. Cockers are nice, but meet the parent dogs. They can have some bad temperament problems.

Hello,
I have a "Cockalier" or "King Cocker" which is a cavalier king charles/cocker spaniel mix. She's absolutely darling. She loves kids and other dogs. She's even good with the rabbit I babysit occassionally. She's cuddly and loving, playful but not destructive. She has been a little difficult to potty train. She's full grown now and is about 20 pounds, bleinham in color. She's a beautiful dog and gets a ton of attention when we go anywhere. She does shed, but not as obnoxiously as some other breeds.
just enough to have to keep a lint roller on hand.

I would totally reccomend her breed to anyone, but with one note. I didn't research like I should have and purchased her from a puppy store (shame on me). A few days after I bought her, her left lung collapsed from Pneumonia, cost me a fortune and almost gave me a nervous breakdown. Can you imagine buying a sweet puppy and it almost dieing? It still breaks my heart to think about it. So, here is my advice, only buy from a reputable breeder, never from a puppy store (anyone who uses the term "kennel cough" is full of balogna-- that includes vetrinarians, they often work with puppy stores and make money off of the referalls). Avoid breeders from Missouri, if you do some online research you'll see why. Make sure you get to see the conditions the sire and dame have been living in with your own eyes. It might seem like a lot of effort, but it'll be worth it to have a heathly puppy with a long life ahead of it.

Best of luck to you. Any ideas what your going to name the new baby when you get it?

I have 3 Cav's and I love them! I have 5 children and they are great with them, my youngest is 3 and shes been with them since she was born. They have an A+ temperament and really love people. They are easy going and don't shed to much as long as you keep up with grooming. Their hair will matt mostly the ears. With all breeds you with find a defect such as the heart with the Cav's. I breed them and my male and female are both heart certified. Also when you look make sure you have the baby vet checked before you buy and also a good thing is make sure its not a puppy mill.
Good luck and be picky !!

Nope. Mutts are mutts are mutts. You really had no business breeding a mutt in the first place. 100 dollars each is more than generous for each pup! I know someone who is 1/4 japanese, but you could never tell by looking at him...but does that make him any less of a "mutt?" I think not.
