To take the lower seat, or the least important seat.
That way, if the host says, "Friend, come to a better seat," you will be honored before the others. However, if you take the most important seat, the host may say, "Please give up your seat, for someone more important is here," and then you'll be humilated before the others. He who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
