Depending on what it is for -

for general use I use Frank Incense and Myrrh
for healing and reiki sessions I use usually Lavender and Sage mix and sometimes citrus blends
for relaxing and temple work I use Sage, Sandalwood, or Lavender
For intense visions and out of body work I use Mace

But a meditative state IS mind altering!

My strongest response is to frankincense. I wonder sometimes if that isn't why it is listed as one of the gifts of the magi (wise men) listed in the gospels.

I also have a positive response to rose musk, but I haven't been able to find it since I moved to the Midwest. It was in Long's Drugs in California, and readily available.

for me it's rosemary. It's protective and to me it just smells really good. Blessed Be

lavender is good for relaxing both body and mind.. it definitely helps.
nag champa is also good.
