A disabled person, say in a wheel chair, can still "walk" their dog. Person sits in wheel chair, dog walks alongside.

You'd need somebody else to be involved in the training though to help a young dog to steady and not race off. Dogs are remarkably adaptable and sense if their human is incapacitated or vulnerable.

If you can, get an older dog (3 years or so), not a puppy.

No better pal for a disabled person than a dog.

It depends on the disability. I know that on days when it is too hot to walk my dog i put him on the treadmill for about 30-60 minuets(supervised only). Or on days when I don't have time I take my doberman for a good bike ride for about 15 minuets.

Those are just some alternatives to walking a dog.

A treadmill would do the trick. As for them going out to potty, if you could have a doggy door installed they could go out when they wanted. Of course you would also need a fenced yard. Small dogs can get lots of exercise just running around the house. Maybe you could also hire a neighborhood kid/teen to come over and walk the dog a couple of times a day.

Mine have no issues with walking right alongside my wheelchair or a motorized scooter. Did take a little introduction for them to be comfortable, but only a few minutes each. Actually, larger dogs can be trained to pull the manual chair, giving them greater exercise and you an easier walk.

Take a rubber ball and roll it on the floor and let it bounce against the baseboard. After about 15 throws your dog's heart rate should be up enough for a sufficient workout. Be sure to have cold water waiting for after the workout.

I've seen more than one dog walked with owner on one of those little scooters. Even shown in the AKC ring this way. AND two owners in agility and one in obedience with a power wheel chair.
