....round dogs nails so that they can't scratch themselves. Despite me clipping/trimming my 8 month old Chihuahua's nails they are so sharp that she cuts herself when she scratches an itch.
What's the best way to round them off so they are smooth?

just get a nail file and file away. you can also get something to cap the nails from you vet or pet store but they wont stay on too long. good luck.

Filing is good.

They also have rubber nail covers for dogs nails that you can pick up at the pet store. You trim the nails, file them a bit, then apply the rubber covers with nail glue.

They come in a variety of colors and sizes.

Go to a beauty supply shop and buy an electric nail file, like you use when getting a manicure. Be sure to add a drop of baby oil on each nail before you start the procedue. Praise your dog each time. Hopefully this will build his confidence in your ability to help, not cause distress.

Sure there is. Just use a nail file or an emery board. Some people trim their dogs' nails with a Dremel tool. All work well.

I believe there is a plastic kind of polish , that adheres to the nail ,of course it last only so long. You could try a nail file or walk on pavement alot!check with a vet before putting anything on your dogs nails.

the first question is "why is my dog so itchy?"
Does she have fleas? Allergies? Skin problems?
Answer those questions first.
