I'll most likely be going to Hawaii in early August and staying at a hotel in Waikiki. How's the swimming conditions in the ocean? Are the waves rough or calm? What about sharks or other dangers?

Please don't freak out, but there are certain times that box jellyfish show up. You can learn more from the article below. We wrote that article as a public service announcement when there was an abnormal amount of jellyfish that were predicted back in May. The jellyfish presence is not too frequent, but it is predictable based on the phases of the moon. Be sure and check out the calendar of that predicts when they might be there. I just got back from Hawaii and Waikiki Beach. The waves and condition of the water was perfect. It was really beautiful. However, Waikiki is REALLY populated. There are SO many people. Tour a little more around the island for some beaches if you want. I went to this one beach on Oahu called Big Sandy. It was gorgeous and hardly anyone was there. It is only a 20 minute drive from Waikiki. There were no shark warnings at all, or even signs that warned about any sharks, so I wouldn't worry about those guys. Jellyfish are the only concern you might have on Waikiki. The most common danger actually is getting sun burned really bad, so put lots of sunscreen on often. Have fun it is so beautiful!
P.S. I encourage you to drive around to the back side of Oahu, that is the best part. Stop at a roadside stand that sells mango and stuff fresh. Yummy!
I almost forgot to say: Go to pearl harbor and the U.S.S Arizona Memorial while you are on Oahu. And go to the Aloha Tower. The Aloe Moana mall is pretty good, and there are some great Asian restaurants on the island.

Waikiki Beach is very nice and calm most of the time. If you're really concerned about conditions, there is even a protected area close to the Honolulu zoo side of the beach that little kids swim in all the time because it's so calm.
Sharks and other dangers.......there haven't been any sightings of sharks in the Waikiki area in a number of years but we live on an island....they're out there! The only thing that Waikiki normally has to deal with is the monthly influx of box jellyfish about 10 days after the full moon. Don't worry about it though, the lifeguards won't let you in the water if the jellyfish are out there. I would suggest you bring along a pair of water shoes to protect your feet from rocks and coral just in case.

i live in hawaii and i've been to waikiki beach :)
i guess it is pretty nice and the waters are nice. however thers a LOT OF PEOPLE! (since all the tourists go there) . be careful of the reef :) theres also a wall people like to jump off of into the beach.. but be careful a guy has died from doing that before lol. after swimming you can walk around waikiki and go to the stores :) have fun

I went to Waikiki beach a few months ago and it's beautiful the waves aren't big at all. But the reefs do cut your feet and it hurts. They do have a sign to watch for jellyfish but we never saw any. Good luck and have fun!

H2O is crystal clear, beautiful, w/ baby waves great for the family. It'll just be crowdedGo down to Ala Moana beach-- Magic Island less of a crowd :)

It is good for swimming, just watch out for people learning to surf, they can be a bit off target! Have never seen a shark in 4 trips there, howver the ocean floor can be sharp

waikiki is by far the best swiming beach you could hope for. not great for snorkeling but fabulous for everything else. almost zero shark danger and the waves are perfect for bodyboarding but not so big that you cant enjoy swiming

"Govisithawaii's" answer is best. She is right, the swimming is the best...warm, sandy, minimal almost no waves (maybe like a green flag day at lake michigan), but watch out for jellies! They can wind you up in the hospital and screw up a few days for your vacation! They have guards at the beach, who call out jelly warnings, but will not stop you from going in the water. It's a personal choice.
