The problem with the written word is that the all important voice inflection is missing. It can change the whole meaning of what is being said. I've found it to be a problem on occasion. Comments?

For me it is hard to get across that really snarky vocal inflection that I'm so good at face to face.

Voice stress is the least of your worries. Hebrew doesn't have vowels. The bible is as hashed about as the "Canterbury Tales." The referents are long since lost. All that remains is political commentary

"Blessed are the cheesemakers"
"This is clearly an allegorical statement extending to all dairy workers."

Look up LEARNED SCHOLARLY commentary on the sublime use of light and shadow in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling. After cleaning it was 500 years of soot. The ceiling is bright as a comic book. The gender of the angels was overpainted by a censorious Church. By th 1960s most of the LEARNED SCHOLARLY commentary was purest bullsh!t. Art restoration reversed it all - again voluminously published upon without any real content.

I definitely agree with you. Many times things don't sound the same when they are merely typed then when they are said. Language can be softened or hardened by the lilt of our voices.

I think a lot of people read what I write and conclude that I hate and despise certain groups of people. I don't at all, but I do not approve of their life style choices. But what they see is negative and they infer the negative about me. I am not present to help with understanding.

I have gotten a lot of nasty, nasty email from people that think I am out to hurt them or attack them. I have no such intent, but they come so engrossed with just the words that they miss how they are put together. I suppose if I talked them personally the opportunity is still there for misunderstanding. But I would hope that it would go better.

Yes and not just the absence of voice inflection but of facial expression as well...both important for effective communication.

I have thought of this often, yes. So I am careful what words I use, and I focus on brevity (though lately my answers have been a little long); mostly, I allow the words to flow through me, from that deeper part of me; I have not often felt misunderstood, but it still goes with the territory.

Writing allows you to put the voice into the written words if a certain sound is needed. We just don't take the time to reflect it in our writing

yes indeed - humor is tough, particularly my brand

even when I re-read, I know I am infusing my words with my inflection, even though I am trying to read without....

oh well - people misunderstand even when I am s p e l l i n g it out clear as day, right in front of them
-and some just don't want to hear it.

best to take it all with a grain of salt and a shot of tequila!

ANIMALS Lyrics:
DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD

Baby, do you understand me now
Sometimes I feel a little mad
Well don't you know that no-one alive
Can always be an angel
When things go wrong I seem to be bad

I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree
With a joy that's hard to hide
And sometimes it seems that
All I have to do is worry
And then you're bound to see my other side

I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

If I seem edgy, I want you to know
That I never mean to take it out on you
Life has it's problems and I get my share
And that's one thing I never mean to do

'cause I love you
Oh, oh, oh, baby, don't you know I'm human
Have thoughts like any other one
Sometimes I find myself alone and regretting
Some foolish thing, some little simple thing I've done

I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Yes, I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Yes, I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Yes, I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

I think at one time or another we are all misunderstood because like you have stated just because you mean something to be perfectly harmless you cannot help how another perceives it. However, I'm perfectly open to being emailed if someone has an issue and I'm happy to discuss it with them and perhaps they can see that way what my original meaning was.

Always, I've been on here for about a year now and people still don't know what my beliefs are.

Also I ask pretty deep questions so it's easy to be misunderstood sometimes.
