Atheism is defined as (someone who is a) non-theist. If you don't follow a theistic belief system, you ar an atheist. Theism is defined as a belief in a personal God, leading atheism to mean disbelief in a personal god (leavng the board open of semantic problems and/or non-personal gods)

It's an established word with an established meaning.
It's simply not the case that each person makes up their own "definitions" of words; communication would be completely impossible.
An atheist is a person who doesn't believe in the existence of any gods.
