and I think you should have said, "one of the coins is a nickel. what is the other one."

the question states that ONE of them is not a quarter. that is correct. One of them is a nickel, the other is a quarter

The other coin IS a quarter; the one that is not a quarter is a nickel, and 25 cents plus 5 cents is thirty cents. Pay attention to "one or the other" to get this.

one of the coins is not a quarter.. that doesnt mean the other one isnt... so one of the coins IS a quarter and one is a nickel.
