It measures 15 by 12. I want to get new carpet but don't know how many square feet to buy.

Just multiply 15 x 12 = 180

180 square feet. Since most carpet is 12 feet wide get a carpet 12 x 15

Square footage is also called "area". Multiply length of room by width of room (12x15) and you will get 180 sq. ft.
If it will be "tucked" under baseboards or run into doorway openings, get a little more than 180...make a diagram of your room including doorways, stairs, heat registers, etc. and take it to the carpet dealer!
