No. It is a little over 10% and growing. The American Religious Identification Survey also tabulates the percentage of the U S Population with no religious affiliation at 14%.

According to the polls I've seen, 3% identify as atheist and about 10-12% identify as some form or non-religious - atheist, agnostic, secular humanist, non-religious.

3% is probably right. yahoo answers is not a good source for demographics. One, on the internet, a minority can easily make a lot of noise. Second, many of the posts here are not so much atheist as they are people who find christians full of it. Those are not always the same thing.

Yes.
According to polls just 3% of americans are atheist, yet for some strange reason, they have accomplished a very serious stranglehold on the education system.
What is ironic, is that the reasoning behind the faith and support system of evolution/atheism, is that, the "consensus" of scientists are in agreement on the topic of evolution. It would seem that by this base of reasoning and logic, (truth being a matter of democratic vote) that the atheists would have to submit to the creationist. Yet, just as the terrorist has become the master of media manipulation, so it goes with the atheist.
What is worthy of note, is that obviously, the demographics of creationist to atheist as represented by the nation of the US, is not equally translated to this particular forum. It is clearly obvious that the atheists are disproportionately represented here on Y!A R+S category by reason of their apparent need to try and influence any participant that has religious faith. There can be no other explaination for their overwhelming presence here, unless it is the fear they have of those of faith having a forum with which to build each other up.
The fact that atheists only frequent this category to promote their propaganda and tear down those of faith, really suggests to me that they are really a group that not only has serious doubts, but a deeply rooted sense of fear of those that may have the truthful answers that they so longingly want to squash.

According to statistics that is true and 33% are Christians. I'd say there is just a large percent of that 3% that choose to come to Y!A. Too bad the largest percent of those that do come here do so, not to have intelligent debates, but to ridicule and demean believers, especially Christians.

The graph...

... shows a huge massive decrease in the number of Christians in the nation with a whopping nearly 5% increase in the number of Atheists.

I thought it was closer to 7%.
I wonder how many gay atheists there are... 7% of 10% is pretty small.
