Everyone I've talked to says that it's not what it used to be, of course only a couple of them have actually worked in this profession and it was many years ago. So I would really like some insite on what it's like now. I am wanting to move to LA and if can't find a job then I am thinking of being a flight attendant but don't want to make such a bold move in the wrong direction. At the moment I live on the east coast, and California is calling my name. Please help with some advice. Thank you guys!!

Just ask yourself:

Do I like people?
Do I like planes?
Do I like flying?
Am I patient (especially with grouchy people, noisy kids, demanding jerks, nervous passengers)?
Do I like being on the move all the time?
Do I like extra hours, irregular schedules, working unusual hours, rarely being able to be found at some place?
Do I not get airsick, nauseous, nervous or irritable when flying long hours?
Do I like wearing an uniform?

If you said yes to all of those questions, I guess that's a good career choice for you.

In other words, it's not about how much you will be making or what people say about it as a profession. It's more about you, how you are, what you're good at and what things you like.

Finally, I recommend you watching the movie "view from the top" with Gwyneth Paltrow and Christina Applegate. You'll get a pretty good insight on what being a flight attendant is and represents.

Good luck!

No one can tell you definitively whether any career will be good for you. What works for some people is horrible for someone else. Only you can decide what will work best for you.

I am also a firm believer that you can create a great environment for yourself no matter where you work or what you do. It is all in your attitude. If you believe it will be a bad situation for you, it probably will. But if you are excited and you enjoy traveling, I say go for it and see it as an adventure.

I know 3 or 4 people who worked for Delta as Flight Attendants. Everyone of them loved it. They had difficult days and hard trips, and yucky schedules, but those things did not outweigh their enjoyment for this career choice.

Do you enjoy traveling? Why are you considering this career choice? For money or pleasure or both? In the end if you decide to take this on, you also get to choose when it is time for you to leave. For better or for worse.

Enjoy your flight!

You should consult a career counselor to assess what professions are ideal for you. Alternatively, read and complete the activities in What Color is Your Parachute. Knowing your career options is the vital first step in the process. Next, talk with people in these careers. If you do your homework, you will have a good idea on what careers are best for you to consider. Armed with knowing your capabilities, likes/dislikes, and aptitude, you will make smarter career moves. I'm at the same place, and will be relocating to Washington D.C. and have a great understanding on what careers would fit me best, and soon you will too. Good Luck!!

The pay isn't great. The work is essentially a waitress, only without tips. Depending on how the airline is doing, you could be laid off. Finally, you have to work in the customer service field with the impolite public. It is up to you, but travel loses its luster after a while.

If you think waiting on customers in a restaurant is bad, you'll pretty much have the same experience on a jet as a flight attendant.

You'll have to deal with rude, irate morons and, if you're attractive, dirty old men who hit on you and pinch your bottom every chance they get.

But if you can tolerate all that and want the chance to travel, it's the way to go. I just wouldn't look at it as a long-term career option.

First responder is quite right. The pay isn't wonderful (the airlines have had to cut back due to financial difficulties), but if you like to travel, it's a good way to go.
