No, we never ever prayed, or were required to pray. I went to a public school all the way up to the year 2000.

I graduated high school in 2002. We were not required to pray, but every choir concert was Jesus-this, son of God-that. They did Ahmal and the Midnight Visitors for the musical one year. (The religious content of the operetta wasn't the most offensive thing though: one of the wise-men had black-face makeup!) A Nativity scene was also on display for all the winter music concerts. I remember having guest speakers come in and tie in Christian messages and lessons, but most of the assemblies were okay.

When I was inducted into the National Honor Society, we were led in prayer. Also, I've seen graduation speakers lead everyone in prayer before as well.

I remember having to recite the Lord's Prayer every morning in a public primary school. That was in the early 80s. Maybe it was because it was in a small town; I don't really know. After grade 2, I switched schools and never had to again (though I was still in the same town).

I went to school in the 60's and 70's and there was quite a few instances when public prayer was engaged in. Even over the PA system. Nobody was 'required', but it was there. Like the Pledge of Allegiance". Although the 'pledge' was required and you got hauled to the principal's office if you didn't engage in it.

The public school I attended in the early 60's required prayer at the beginning of every day, just before the pledge of allegiance.

We had the pledge of allegiance to the American flag every morning, then a moment of silence in public school so that whoever wished to pray could do so, quitely. No child or teacher was actually asked to pray, according to what I remember of that time. At lunchtime, we did say "grace" in kindergarten that went like this:. "God is great, God is good and we thank Him for our food, Amen."

I went to school in the 60's and 70's and we prayed in the morning and before lunch when I was small. In the older grades we had a short devotion that came over the loud speaker in the mornings. It never killed anyone. God bless!!

I am 51 and I remember praying as a class before every meal. We used to sing the Johnny Appleseed Prayer:

The Lord is good to me.
For this I thank the Lord.
For giving me the things I need
The sun and the rain and the apple seed
The Lord is good to me.

I went to a public elementary school in the early and mid 60s.

We were never required to pray. I went in the 60's-70's.

Students may pray if they so choose now. No one is asked to pray. No one is told that they cannot pray. It is a matter of choice. Any prayer that is done is done silently and individually.
