Food trials are always an option but the most common reason this is happening is because of a flea allergy. Look through your cats fur and see if you see anything that looks like dirt, if you pick some out and put a little water on it it should turn red, if you have fleas. Try advantage or frontline even if you see no flea dirt. Other probelms are nervousness, has there been something new introduced to your pet? If in fact it is a food allergy, most likely its an allergy to wheat or some other product in the food. Take your cat to the vet if the flea stuff doesn't work, FYI the crap you buy at Walmart and other such stores do not work, use ONLY Advantage or Frontline!!!! When you go to the vet, bring your current food along.

Cats pull out there fur for a number of reasons,
but the first that comes to mind is fleas. Some cats are very allergic to fleas, even just one single bite can drive a cat nuts. Is your cat indoor outdooor, have access to a dog or cat thats indoor/ outdoor, is she on advantage, or frontline? Don't use off the shelf flea killers. The are highly poisonous, and many cats have died from them. Flea collars only work around the neck, totally missing the rest of the cat.
The second that comes to mind is food allergies. Many cats are allergic to grains like wheat and corn, which is usually the number two or three ingredient of lower quality cat foods. I would look for a higher quality cat food that doesn't have wheat or corn in it (wellness, innova comes to mind). Even if your cat isn't allergic, going to a corn and wheat free diets can work miracles- my cats stopped puking (before it was about twice a month), stopped eating my plants, and pooped a lot less, and there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that going grainless is all around good for cats.
The third is stress. Pulling hair is a stress relief for them. Very common in animals. Has something changed recently? New animal. neighbor, furniture arrangement, new pain(smells)? Is she a high stress cat, afraid of everything? Is she very bored and needs something to do? You can try a product called "Feliway" that plugs into a wall and gives off a pheromone (people can't smell it) thats suppose to calm cats, or get the vet to prescribe some sort of kitty anti-anxiety medicine. If she's bored, start teaching her some tricks. Cats are very trainable - I've got mine to sit, jump in a box, jump on and off a table, touch a target. I use a process called clicker training, and doing a google search will come up with a number of websites devoted to this.
First thing I would do, no matter what, is take your cat to the vet for a complete physical to rule out anything major. He might be able to prescribe something that would help. As for the rest of the procedures, Start by making one change, see how your cat does, and then try another. You should give each change at least a month (although frontline or advantage, you should know almost immediately )
It might even take months, as you keep trying out different ideas, but the higher quality cat food is good, even if she's not allergic to the food.

My mother had a cat that did that because she was allergic to fleas. Whenever she went outside and got fleas on her she would pull her hair out trying to get them off. Look and see if your cat has any small bumps under the skin, that is the way my mothers cat started out. If you get frontline and put on your cat it will keep the fleas off so your cat can heal. Hope this helps.

There are some cats that for some reason start to pull their hair out. It is not a medical condition as much as it is some sort of mental issue. Normally it is on their chest or tails.
Good Luck

Check with the vet to find out if your cat might have any allergies. One of my cats did that when we first rescued her, because she was allergic to fleas, and she stopped once whe was free of them.

changing her food might help, i agree with some of the other people saying to check for flees but she also may just have dry skin and it might be iching her. try shampooing her with a type of cat shampoo that contains oatmeal its supose to ease the ich. i hope it works for you
