Basically the clouds control our climate. Cosmic rays cause cloud. When the sun is active with solar storms, the storms stop many of the cosmic rays reaching our atmosphere, which means we then don't have much cloud. When the sun is calm, we get loads of cosmic rays (which come from far away blown up stars) which causes loads of cloud. The big low clouds, which we have seen a lot of lately are dark on the bottom but bright white on top, and the white tops reflect the suns heat back into space, which then cools us. The sun goes thru an 11 year cycle and is due to be at a solar maximum around 2010-2012, which means we will be having alot of warm weather after that the sun will be quiet for a while which mans we will cool down and hopefully have some nice snowy winters.
We are being told by the government that we are causing global warming, because they just love to rip us off. The rise in carbon dioxide lags 800 years behind temperature rise. Watch the great global warming swindle. www.greatglobalwarmingswindle.co.uk

Much electricity is generated by fossil-fueled power plants, which spew copious quantities of CO2 into the air. So, every bit of power that isn't used is power that isn't generated, and the CO2 is reduced a tiny bit. There is widespread opinion that CO2 is a contributor to global warming; howerver, I have my doubts: controlled experiments are impossible, and all the prognostications are based on computer simulations -- which may be accurate, or not. In any case, the amount of CO2 emitted by civilization is so large that piecemeal efforts will avail little, and wholesale efforts will cost more than anyone can afford to pay. The UN has proposed a program to deal with it; the price tag is $557,000,000,000,000 -- far more than the total value of every asset on the planet.

OK. Here goes. Fossil fuel is coal and oil. This is burnt to run power stations. The fossil fuels will one day run out. The more electricity we all use, the quicker these fuels will run out. We need to use less power (gas and electricity). Just turning the heating down by one degree in the winter will save a lot . Energy efficient lightbulbs will also help. You won't have to feel cold; there are Government schemes to help the needy. In the future, we will get energy from wind and wave power.

Electricity is created by burning fossil fuel. By turning off your electricity when not in use makes the generating plant idle down a little. One house would not make a noticeable difference, but a whole neighborhood would.

Examples of fossil fuels are: gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, and home heating oil to heat the house and make hot water with.
Coal is another example, and is more smokey then all the others.

I take it that you mean turning off unused lights & such. If your the energy source is water, it conserves water because that is less electricity being used from that source. As for the other sources like wind farms, I don't know. Any little bit to help conserve energy helps the earth. If one has solar power, it would save on energy for other uses in the home.

Your carbon footprint is the amount of damage you personally have done on your time on the earth. If we all work at reducing our own carbon footprint, by recycling, not using the car too much, turning off the electricity etc, we can do our "bit"!
